November 3, 22 Comments The whitehouse, Scene of last weeks erie discovery. The National Reporter While repainting a seldom used upper corridor in the Whitehouse last week, a crew of painters discovered a trap door in the ceiling that had been hidden underneath a thick layer of plaster. The painters let their curiosity get the better of them and they broke through to see what was up there. There was crap all over the place, man. Have you ever been in one? So, I tell Jose to hand me his flashlight so I could see if there was anything good up there.

Potential — by BiStander. This is a creative, nonfiction story based on actual events. All names, locations and time-lines have been changed to protect the guilty. I have also added details and events to make it a good story while maintaining anonymity. Although people told me about events, they could not fully transfer their thoughts, feelings and emotions to me, so I did my best, based on my own experience, to portray them.

Listed are the top dozen major companies that produced this fabulous antique hardware, which includes door knobs, door bells, hinges, escutcheons, door plates, hooks, brackets, and .
How are antique doorbells installed? What is “antique” hardware? An antique, according to the federal government United States Customs is an item over years old. For the purposes of dating antique hardware we typically rely on the date of an antique hardware catalogue which shows the item or, in some instances, the age of the building it was removed from. There are as many definitions of “vintage” as there are queries. Within this web site I consider an item as vintage if it is over 50 years old.
Test with a magnet! A magnet will not stick to brass, bronze, copper, zinc, pewter, gold or silver.. It will stick to iron or steel. There are more metal types but those are the ones most used for antique and vintage hardware. It’s usually very hard to tell the difference but, in general, brass will have a yellow color and bronze will have a more rose color. The year it was made can also give a good indication of which is which.

Such is the paucity of power that you can actually use that engine and use it hard without accumulating antisocial speeds. The real joy is to be found on back roads, thanks to excellent steering and damping that involves you in the action without impeding your progress by being overly stiff. Its size and keen throttle response mean the Swift Sport is also excellent in town, while the addition of a sixth gear over the previous version means it is less of a buzz box on the motorway.

Hughes of This Old House magazine Photo by Wyatt McSpadden Photo by Wyatt McSpadden There once was a time — 80 or so years ago — when multifaceted glass doorknobs with mirrored star-burst centers were standard issue in new homes.
Today, they are mined like diamonds at salvage yards and flea markets. Unlike the flimsy “builder’s special” models now sold at he corner hardware store, glass knobs from the first half of the 20th century were made to last, mounted in steel or brass shanks, as opposed to the brittle metal alloy and plastic ones used now, says Brad Kittel, president of the Antique Doorknob Collectors of America. Their enduring craftsmanship and design — and their ability to work with most modern locksets — have earned them preferential status among owners of old and new houses alike.
Emblems of Wartime Shortages Glass doorknobs date back to , when the process for pressing molten glass into molds was invented, but they didn’t become ubiquitous until after the United States entered World War I, in Cast brass, bronze, and iron doorknobs, which had dominated the hardware market since the beginning of the Victorian era in , were in short supply because metals were needed for airplanes and ammunition.
During that era, most glass knobs were clear and featured six, eight, or 12 facets. Their faces were flat so you could peer inside to see star, bullet, and pin-prick designs molded into their bases. Less common were colored-glass knobs in robin’s egg and cobalt blues, emerald, amber, violet, white milk, and Vaseline glass which got its yellow-green color from adding trace amounts of uranium to the mold.
Shapes also varied, from ovals with incised star patterns to crystal globes with tiny bubbles inside — a popular s Art Deco style that works well with modern interiors today.

He was teammates with future Major League pitcher Jesse Hahn on both teams.
Harvey returned to Chatham in after a difficult sophomore year on the mound. As Harvey explains, he had lost some of the mechanics and flexibility that had made him such a great pitcher throughout high school and the beginning of his college career.
Throughout most of history, door knobs (also spelled as one word, “doorknobs”) weren’t knobs at all. If a door needed to be secured, wood or wrought-iron latches or .
A Thomas Sams Photofact publication, first edition, first printing This book explains the uses of Lasers and Masers and their applications. Masers in their fundamental action are completely different then vacuum tubes or transistors, while electronics abound with many new techniques and applications, most of these are modifications of pre-existing knowledge and do not represent revolutionary ideas. The Maser is an entirely new concept. Noise-Free amplifiers and ultra-stable signal sources are just two Maser applications.
A special type of Maser, called the Laser, is a light amplifier and source of coherent light; it is a spectacular by product and the first ever produced by man. The pictures in this guide were made to portray certain specific points noted in the title of each page withe a brief description adjacent to each picture. Very attractive lighted dial. Collectors associate Addison with the stunning line of highly prized and expensive Catalin radios produced by this Canadian maker.
This seldom found plastic model is cute as a button with a crisp dial and gorgeous marbleized knobs. It’s also rather unique because the entire cabinet is a single molded piece sitting on top of the metal chassis. That allowed the designers to carve a convenient carry handle into the back and eliminate the usual flimsy cardboard back.

A missing knob on the drawer of a desk, a sideboard, a chest of drawers or any other piece of furniture is a very obvious and unsightly feature. It will catch everyone’s eye because the natural symmetry of the piece has been destroyed. So the sooner it is fixed or replaced, the better. Indeed, opening and closing a twin knobbed drawer by just using one knob will soon damage the drawer itself or the runners or the framework. Before long, unless you replace the knob, you will have a drawer that fits badly and needs repairing.
The knob may come off a drawer while you are using it, in which case you will have it to hand when you want to replace it.

Penn Central Amtrak routes are shown. As passenger service declined various proposals were brought forward to rescue it. The Doyle Report proposed that the private railroads pool their services into a single body. The federal government passed the High Speed Ground Transportation Act of to fund pilot programs in the Northeast Corridor , but this did nothing to address passenger deficits. In late multiple proposals emerged in Congress, including equipment subsidies, route subsidies, and, lastly, a “quasi-public corporation” to take over the operation of intercity passenger trains.
Matters were brought to a head on March 5, , when the Penn Central , the largest railroad in the Northeast United States and teetering on bankruptcy, filed to discontinue 34 of its passenger trains. They conceived the National Railroad Passenger Corporation NRPC , a private entity that would receive taxpayer funding and assume operation of intercity passenger trains.
