Immunology and Inflammation Graduate Training Program The goal of the Immunology and Inflammation program is to train students to be independent scientists with a strong foundation in the scientific method and detailed knowledge and understanding of molecular immunology. The program faculty are drawn from across the NYU Medical Center and downtown campuses and share a common interest in solving critical problems in basic, translational and clinical immunology. The study of the immune system is interdisciplinary and approaches range from biochemistry to molecular genetics and microscopy to systems biology. In addition to faculty with interests in fundamental mechanisms of immunology, many investigators focus on diseases in which immunity and inflammation play important roles, including inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, staphylococcal infections, tuberculosis, HIV, parasitic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, asthma, and rheumatic diseases. An additional growing focus is on the bidirectional interactions between the microbiome and immunity and inflammation. As students integrate coursework, seminars, and research experience, they gain the knowledge, skills, experience, and confidence required to launch their careers. The training program website is found here. Heidelberger, who is often regarded as the “father” of modern immunology by demonstrating that antibodies are proteins, joined the NYU Department of Pathology in and continued to work here until his death in

Not just a year ago my wisdom was tucked tightly away in my mouth, just below the surface of my gums, bothering no one. And then, last fall, it decided to emerge in the shape of three large, impacted teeth that had to come out. The modern diet with its softer foods, along with marvels of modern technologies such as forks, spoons and knives, has made the need for wisdom teeth nonexistent. As a result, evolutionary biologists now classify wisdom teeth as vestigial organs, or body parts that have become functionless due to evolution.
Why do wisdom teeth wait to erupt long after the tooth fairy has stopped leaving change under your pillow? Tooth development, from baby primary teeth to permanent teeth, takes place in an organized fashion, over a course of years, with the first molar erupting around the age of six and the second molar erupting around the age of Scientific literature has yet to be able to explain why the number of teeth per individual varies, but for those who do get these extraneous, or supernumerary, teeth, it can lead to all sorts of problems.
Because human jaws have become smaller throughout evolutionary history, when wisdom teeth form they often become impacted, or blocked, by the other teeth around them. Also, if the tooth partially erupts, food can get trapped in the gum tissue surrounding it, which can lead to bacteria growth and, possibly, a serious infection.
Wisdom teeth that do not erupt but remain tucked away can also lead to oral problems, such as crowding or displacement of permanent teeth. On very rare occasions, a cyst fluid filled sac can form in the soft tissue surrounding the impacted wisdom tooth. These cysts can lead to bone destruction, jaw expansion, or damage to the surrounding teeth. Even more uncommonly, tumors can develop in the cysts, which can lead to the jaw spontaneously breaking if the tumor or cyst grows too much.
There are patients that develop wisdom teeth that function just as well as every other tooth in the mouth, and as a result they do not need to go under the knife.

Nagel said one factor that may have contributed to the rise in on-campus reported rapes is a change in federal reporting requirements. The report, released earlier this month, is a federally-mandated annual survey required of all colleges and universities that receive federal funding.
It tracks crime on-campus and areas adjacent to the campus.

PY – Y1 – N2 – Aggression in dating relationships is associated with attitudes that justify its use. Attitudes about dating aggression are targeted by prevention efforts, contributing to a need to measure these attitudes sensitively, accurately, and multidimensionally. We describe two new measures of attitudes about aggression, each tapping different attitudinal components, and compare their psychometric properties with an existing scale. The 1st assesses attitudes about physical aggression in provocative situations.
The 2nd taps attitudes about verbally aggressive, controlling, and jealous tactics against a dating partner. Data from 2, high school students were factor analyzed and cross-validated for each new scale, Compared with an existing measure, the scales had comparable levels of reliability and validity and improved response distributions. A 2nd-order factor analysis lends support to a multidimensional view of attitudes about dating aggression.
